Melanoma Monsters

Melanoma Monsters

Moles can be small, innocuous blemishes on the skin. They can also be the first signs of melanoma, the most fatal form of skin cancer. Unlike many other cancers, the signs of melanoma are often readily visible, and many can be detected by a patient skin self-examination (SSE). When detected and treated early enough, melanoma is almost always curable. Unfortunately, research has shown that only 30% of at-risk individuals perform SSE’s, contributing to over 10,000 deaths every year. Traditional awareness efforts have prioritized sun protection, yet few focus on the importance of early detection. Empowering primary care physician to have their patients screen new and abnormal moles is the best way to significantly reduce the morbidity and mortality of this disease.
